Photis Konstantinidis was
born in Alexandria and lived
in London for many years;
he wrote and directed many
documentaries which cover
stories that must never be
forgotten. He is especially in-
terested in Crete, since the
European civilization’s origin
is here, in the Minoan ruins.
He has just finished his
fifth film about Crete, “Cre-
ta Divina”. “I have made four
documentaries”, he says,
“and I wrote a play, “Daska-
logiannis”, that has been per-
formed everywhere in Crete.
I have been visiting Crete
for 22 years; it’s full of cul-
ture and History. History is
everywhere in Greece, but
nowhere so concentrated as
here”.
“Creta Divina” searches the
divine origin of this History.
“It combines documentary
and fiction: an Englishman, a
retired History professor and
amateur botanist, comes to
Crete looking for a rare herb
which symbolizes a universal
dream; he visits archaeologi-
cal sites, contacts people, ab-
sorbs the tradition and nat-
ural beauty of the land, and
savors its food and drinks.
The hero stays in Archanes
and a big part of the story
unfolds in Anogia, covering
traditions and dances. The
shooting of the documenta-
ry has been completed; we
are in the final editing stage.
It’s an English-language film,
which will be distributed
worldwide and will promote
Crete”.
