In the beginning of the 20th century,
Chania was Crete’s capital and
constituted a major attraction for many
Greek and foreign professional and
amateur photographers – note that the
first cameras had arrived on the island
in 1860 – who rushed to set up their
tripods in the Old Town’s cobblestone
alleys, dirt roads, or at the picturesque
Venetian port, to capture life in this
magnificent, but still unexplored land.
Their work was important: through
photos and albums they presented a
panorama of Greece between the two
World Wars, while at the same time
they contributed to the development
of the European public opinion on the
country.

α Χανιά, ως πρωτεύουσα ακό-
μη της Κρήτης στις αρχές του
20ού αιώνα, αποτέλεσαν πόλο
έλξης για Έλληνες και ξένους
φωτογράφους, επαγγελματίες και ερασιτέ-
χνες –εξάλλου, οι πρώτες φωτογραφικές
μηχανές είχαν φτάσει στο νησί το 1860–,
που έσπευδαν να στήσουν το τριπόδι τους
στα πέτρινα σοκάκια της Παλιάς Πόλης,
στους χωμάτινους δρόμους και στο γρα-
φικό ενετικό λιμάνι, για να απαθανατί-
σουν τη ζωή σε αυτόν τον υπέροχο αλλά
ανεξερεύνητο ακόμη τόπο. Το έργο τους
ήταν διπλά σημαντικό: μέσα από καρέ και
λευκώματα αποτύπωσαν την Ελλάδα του
Μεσοπολέμου και συγχρόνως βοήθησαν
στη διαμόρφωση της ευρωπαϊκής κοινής
γνώμης απέναντι στη χώρα.
