24 centuries
ago, some Greeks left their
country in search of a new home. After
months of sailing in the Adriatic Sea, they
reached the Italian coast and saw the
green Monte Conero promontory rising
above white and golden beaches, today’s
renowned Riviera del Conero. The an-
cient travelers continued traveling north
and a few miles farther they discovered a
natural harbor, hidden behind a corner
of the coast, which resembled an elbow.
They named it Ancon (elbow in Greek),
built their houses there, and Ancona was
founded.

More than just a port
In the capital of Marche region, the
sights begin from the pier and the im-
pressive 18.5 m-high Trajan’s Arch (Ar-
co di Traiano, 110 A.D.), built to honor
the Emperor who fortified the town at his
own expenses. At the other side of the
port, on an artificial island connected to
the shore by small bridges, is Mole Van-
vitelliana, a former lazaretto, which now
hosts theatrical and ballet performanc-
es, gigs, and the unique Tattile Statile
