ρισσότερο κρητικό κρασί στο Ηνωμένο Βα-
σίλειο! Η Σαντορίνη έχει κατορθώσει να το-
ποθετήσει κάποια από τα καλύτερα κρασιά
της σε ένα κορυφαίο σουπερμάρκετ, αλλά
εγώ περιμένω να καταφθάσουν τα κρητικά!
Θυμάστε τηνπρώτηφοράπουήπιατερακή;
Θυμάμαι την επόμενη μέρα. Ξύπνησα με τον
χειρότερο πονοκέφαλο που είχα ποτέ. Έφηβη
είχα πάθει μηνιγγίτιδα, και ο πόνος ήταν σχε-
δόν ίδιος. Είμαι αλλεργική, δεν μπορώ να την
πιω. Έτσι καταλαβαίνω ότι δεν είμαι Κρητικιά.
Τι δώρο από την Κρήτη θα πηγαίνατε σε
κάποιον φίλο σας στην Αγγλία;
Βότανα! Κρητική ρίγανη. Για μένα είναι το
άρωμα του βουνού, σαν να παίρνεις μαζί σου
ένα αληθινό κομμάτι του νησιού.
Μαθαίνετε ελληνικά. Πρέπει να είναι έξ-
τρα δύσκολο, δεδομένου ότι οι Κρητικοί
έχουν δική τους διάλεκτο. Έχετε κάποια
αγαπημένη κρητική λέξη;
«Κατσούλα». Λατρεύω τις γάτες και χαίρο-
μαι που υπάρχει ειδική λέξη στα κρητικά γι’
αυτές. Είναι πολύ πιο ποιητική από την ελ-
ληνική λέξη. Πιστεύω ότι η λέξη «γάτα» τις
αδικεί. Το «κατσούλα» ηχεί σαν το γουργού-
ρισμά τους, το οποίο είναι ένας από τους πιο
χαρούμενους ήχους στον κόσμο.
I always have a Greek salad for lunch, and
then there is more reading, more swimming
and maybe a siesta… In the evening I meet
friends for dinner in Agios Nikolaos, there
are some wonderful tavernas there. And then,
late at night, after gazing at the stars for a
while, I go to bed with the happy thought that
tomorrow I will do the same all over again!
Do you dance traditional dances?
I go to several panygiria every summer and
my sweet and long-suffering friend Leonidas
(who is one of the best dancers in Crete)
makes sure that I learn new steps. I can
dance the Siganos without thinking about
it now, but I am trying to master some more
difficult ones (such as the Pentozali) and
maybe I get a little closer to mastering them
each time – even though some of the rhythms
and patterns are extremely hard!
Do you enjoy the Cretan wine?
I am passionate about Cretan wine!
Occasionally a friend arrives from the UK
bringing a French wine as a gift. I put it at the
back of the cupboard or use it as a cooking
wine. Few really good Greek wines are
imported into the UK and most people are
very ignorant about their quality. Santorini
has managed to get some of its best into one
of our top supermarkets but I am waiting for
Cretan wine to arrive!
Remember the first time you tried raki?
I remember the day after, when I woke with
the worst migraine I had ever had. I had
meningitis as a teenager and the pain was
almost that bad. I am allergic. I can’t drink
it. This is the reason I know I am not Cretan.
What would you get as a present for a
friend in England?
Herbs! Oregano from Crete. For me it is the
aroma of the mountainside, like taking back
a real part of the island.
Learning Greek must be extra hard
for you, since Cretans have their own
dialect. Which Cretan word do you love
the most?
“Katzoula” – I love cats so I am glad that they
have their own special word in Crete. It is
much more poetic than the standard Greek
word “gata” which doesn’t do them justice! “…
zoula” makes a kind of purring sound, which
is one of the happiest sounds in the world.

Ντάκος! Είναι ένα πλήρες γεύμα
και, επειδή είμαι σχεδόν χορτο-
φάγος, μου φαίνεται ακόμη ιδα-
νικότερο. Παίρνω μαζί μου στην
Αγγλία παξιμάδια σε μεγάλες
συσκευασίες και στο σουπερ-
μάρκετ μου στο Λονδίνο πουλά-
νε πλέον έξι είδη φέτας, οπότε
είναι εύκολο να βρεθούν τα συ-
στατικά. Έχω μπόλικο λάδι από
τον ελαιώνα του φίλου μου στην
Κρήτη και προσθέτω πάντα μια
γενναία δόση στο τελείωμα.
Favorite Cretan dish
Dakos! It is a perfect meal and
as I am almost vegetarian, it
makes it even more ideal. I bring
back to the UK rusk in big bags
and in my local supermarket
they now sell six types of feta
– so it is easy to find the right
ingredients. I have plenty of
oil from my friend’s olive grove
in Crete so there is always a
generous helping of that on top.
