9 ΥΠΕΡΟΧΑ ΜΥΣΤΙΚΑ ΤΗΣ
ΚΙΣΣΑΜΙΤΙΚΗΣ ΕΝΔΟΧΩΡΑΣ
Άγρια, βραχώδης, μυστηριακή, καταπράσι-
νη –αλλά προσπελάσιμη σχεδόν σε όλα τα
σημεία της–, η κισσαμίτικη ενδοχώρα είναι
έτοιμη να μοιραστεί τα μυστικά της με τους
πιστούς «προσκυνητές» της.
1. Ανάβαση στους Κωμόλιθους, στην Πο-
ταμίδα
Γύρω στα 3,5 χλμ. νότια από το Κα-
στέλι θα βρείτε αυτά τα πυραμιδωτά λοφά-
κια από μαλακό άργιλο, τα οποία οι βροχές,
η διάβρωση και ο χρόνος έχουν σμιλέψει
σε ένα παράξενο, εξωγήινο τοπίο – από μα-
κριά μοιάζουν με πετρωμένους λευκούς
γίγαντες. Οι επιστήμονες λένε πως ο σχη-
ματισμός δημιουργήθηκε πριν από 7,2 εκ.
χρόνια και πως στην ουσία πρόκειται για
υπολείμματα του αρχαίου βυθού, εξ ου και
στα ιζήματά τους έχουν βρεθεί πολλά θα-
λάσσια απολιθώματα. Ηανάβαση και η πε-
ζοπορία στους Κωμόλιθους είναι εύκολες.
2. Αρχαιολογικό sight-seeing στην Πο-
λυρρήνια
Την Πολυρρήνια αξίζει να την
επισκεφθείτε για τη γραφικότητα και το ιδι-
αίτερο παραδοσιακό της χρώμα, αλλά και
για τα ερείπια της ομώνυμης ακρόπολης,
η οποία είναι χτισμένη σε υψόμετρο 418 μ.

2. Archaeological sightseeing in Polyr-
renia
Polyrrenia is picturesque and tra-
ditional; visit the ruins of its acropolis at
an altitude of 418 m. Ancient Polyrrenia
was one of Western Crete’s most power-
ful, independent cities, amphitheatrically
built on a hill, 6 kmsouth of today’s Kastelli.
Saved ruins (foundations of houses, chis-
eled tombs, aqueducts dug into the rock,
towers, signs, ancient temples, fortification
remains) belong to its Hellenistic, Roman,
andByzantine periods. You can visit the an-
cient acropolis by car on the dirt road that
begins at the left of the village entrance, or
on foot through the settlement, but it’s bet-
ter to avoid the walk during the hot hours.
3 & 4. Trekking in Sirikariano and Topo-
liano Gorges
The renowned Sirikariano
(or Tsichliano) Gorge begins from
Polyrrenia and ends up in a chestnut
grove at Marouliana, 20 km farther. It’s
a green heaven, with running waters
plane trees, chestnut trees, carob trees,
oleasters, holm oaks, lentisks, dittany and
KTEL, the public bus service, runs
daily bus routes from Chania to
Kastelli, as well as to all destinations
in CRETE, directly or via connections.
