P.S. The coast contains other less famous,
but equally fascinating beaches with crystal
clear waters. Especially in Kissamos Bay:
Mavros Molos, Viglia and Damiali, which
can be reached through a tunnel next to
the church with the same name.
9 MAGNIFICENT SECRETS OF
KISSAMOS’ INLAND
Wild, rocky, mysterious, very green,
Kissamos’ inland is ready to share its se-
crets with its “faithful”.
1. Ascent to Komolithi in Potamida
Around 3.5 km south of Kastelli there are
pyramidal hills made of soft clay, which
have been sculpted by rain, corrosion
and time into a strange, extraterrestrial
landscape – seen from far, they look like
petrified white giants. Scientists say that
the formation was created 7.2 m years
ago out of the remains of the ancient
seabed, that’s why many sea fossils have
plainwith running waters, plane trees and
Kambos village, pass themountain villages
Kefali and Vathi, and end up in Elafonissi,
or return to Kissamos and follow the “clas-
sic” route, for about 40 km, whichwill allow
you to visit some of the most beautiful in-
land sights with intermediate stops at Pota-
mida, Voulgaro, Topolia, Vlatos, Elos,Milia,
andChrisoskalitissaMonastery. Purewhite,
built on top of a big rock, with a fantastic
view to the Libyan Sea, this magnificent
monastery-monument reminds of a fortress.
Elafonissi is 5 km far fromChrisoskalitis-
saMonastery and it’s unbelievably beauti-
ful, with shallow, green, dazzling blue and
turquoise waters, fine white, slightly pink
sand, and a tiny island that can be reached
on foot through the shallow lagoon. Um-
brellas, seats, and canteens are available,
and the beach is extremely crowded at the
peak of the summer season, that’s why it’s
better to visit Elafonissi after 4 p.m. Alter-
natively, go to the nearby, unorganized, but
equally enchanting beach of Kedrodasos
with age-old cedar trees, or to Aspri Limni
(White Lake) lagoon with a rare ancient
palm tree forest. This area is protected by
the Natura 2000 Network.

νερά, εκτυφλωτικά μπλε και τιρκουάζ, ψιλή
λευκή αμμουδιά, που ροζίζει από τη σκόνη
χιλιάδων θρυμματισμένων κοχυλιών, και
ένα νησάκι αρμενίζει καταμεσής του χάρ-
τη. Για να το φτάσετε, αρκεί να διασχίσετε
με τα πόδια τη μικρή, ρηχή λιμνοθάλασσα
που το χωρίζει από τη στεριά. (σ.σ. Το νερό
στο βαθύτερο σημείο δεν ξεπερνά σε ύψος
το ένα μέτρο…) Υπάρχουν ομπρέλες, καθί-
σματα και καντίνες, αλλά οι επισκέπτες στο
peak της σεζόν γεμίζουν την παραλία σε
βαθμό ασφυξίας. Γι’ αυτό η καλύτερη ώρα
να επισκεφθείτε το Ελαφονήσι είναι μετά
τις 4 το απόγευμα – μέχρι τότε προτιμήστε
την κοντινή, ανοργάνωτη αλλά εξίσου μα-
γική παραλία του Κεδρόδασους με τους
αιωνόβιους κέδρους ή τη λιμνοθάλασσα
της Άσπρης Λίμνης με το σπάνιο αρχαίο
φοινικόδασος. Και κάτι ακόμη: Οι πινακίδες
προειδοποιούν να μην «κλέψετε» άμμοφεύ-
γοντας. Το μέρος συγκαταλέγεται στις προ-
στατευόμενες περιοχές Natura.
ΥΓ.: Λιγότερο διάσημες αλλά υπέροχες
παραλίες με κρυστάλλινα νερά θα βρείτε σε
όλη την ακτογραμμή. Ειδικότερα στον κόλ-
πο Κισσάμου σημειώστε τονΜαύροΜόλο,
