Το εκκλησάκι του 11ου αιώνα πάνω στην
ακτή. / The 11th century chapel on the beach.
Driving carefully on the winding
road towards Anopoli, one has
to stop and admire the view-
panorama: Chora, the Libyan Sea,
Loutro, and Gavdos, all form a
unique natural painting. Anopoli
on the plateau with the same name
is built over the ancient city. Stop
there, and savor the renowned
Sfakia pies with cheese and honey,
or go up to the castle-monastery
of Agia Ekaterini. In the north, one
can still see parts of the Cyclopean
walls that protected the ancient
city. Moving westward, after
Vardinogianni bridge (138 m high,
a popular meeting place of bungee
jumpers), one sees the ruins of
Aradena village, with the church of
Archangel Michael (14th century).
Under the spectacular bridge that
joins two mountains, stands the
gorge with the same name. A path
passes from there and. after 2.5-3
hours trekking, one can reach the
isolated beach of Marmara.

Συνήθως, με την αναχώρηση των απο-
γευματινών καραβιών της επιστροφής –η
Αγία Ρουμέλη, όπως και το Λουτρό, δεν
έχει οδική σύνδεση–, το μέρος αδειάζει
και επανέρχεται σε αργούς, καθημερινούς
ρυθμούς. Αν μείνετε εδώ, βρείτε χρόνο να
ανεβείτε ως το ερειπωμένο τούρκικο κά-
στρο (Κουλές), που δεσπόζει πάνω από το
χωριό. Η διαδρομή δεν είναι μεγάλη (μία
ώρα, με χαλαρό περπάτημα) και η θέα στο
απέραντο Λιβυκό, με τη Γαύδο και τη Γαυ-
δοπούλα να αχνοφαίνονται στον ορίζοντα,
θα σας αποζημιώσει.
Σούγια
Αγαπημένος προορισμός των χίπις στα
70’s, σήμερα η Σούγια είναι ένας ιδανι-
κός προορισμός για ήρεμες, ρέμπελες δια-
κοπές, μέσα σε φύση παρθένα, αλλά με
όλα τα assets, μιας μικρής, οργανωμένης
τουριστικά κοινότητας: μικρά ξενοδοχεία
και ενοικιαζόμενα studios (για προνομια-
κή διαμονή πάνω στη θάλασσα, τσεκάρετε
το «Santa Irene», κυριολεκτικά 10μ. από
την παραλία), cafés και mini-markets, εστι-
ατόρια και ταβέρνες (μην παραλείψετε να
δοκιμάσετε το περίφημο κοντοσούβλι του
Πολύφημου στον πανέμορφο κήπο του με
τα πολύχρωμα λουλούδια και το εντυπωσια-
κό αλμυρίκι), μπαράκια για νυχτερινή ζωή –
όχι όμως φαρμακείο ή πρατήριο καυσίμων.

Fi. The beach, west of the port, is well or-
ganized (showers, umbrellas, pedalos etc.),
and very crowded. If you are looking for
quiet, go to the small picturesque shores
of Maschali, west of the bay, or Spilies at
Marmaro – wonderful, small coasts with
thin pebbles, hidden among the rocks.
Usually, after the departure of the af-
ternoon ships –there is no road to Agia
Roumeli, or Loutro– the place is “emp-
tied” and it returns to its daily slow tem-
po. If you stay here, go up to the ruined
Turkish fort (Koules) that looms above
the village; it takes about an hour, on foot,
but the view to the immense Libyan Sea,
with the islands Gavdos and Gavdopoula
barely visible far away, will reward you
Sougia
Today, Sougia, a favorite hippie desti-
nation in the 70’s, is an a ideal objective
for quiet, relaxed holidays in a virgin na-
