Οδηγώντας προσεκτικά στον
φιδογυριστό δρόµο που «γλείφει»
το βουνό προς την Ανώπολη, θα
κάνετε αναγκαστικά µια στάση
κάπου, για να θαυµάσετε τη θέα-
πανόραµα: η Χώρα, το Λιβυκό, το
Λουτρό, η Γαύδος «χωνεύονται»
σε έναν ανεπανάληπτο φυσικό
πίνακα. Η Ανώπολη, στο οµώνυµο
οροπέδιο, είναι χτισµένη
ολόκληρη πάνω στην αρχαία
πόλη. Στη σύγχρονη ιστορία,
καταγράφεται ως γενέτειρα
του Σφακιανού επαναστάτη-
ήρωα Γιάννη ∆ασκαλογιάννη.
Η προτοµή του δεσπόζει στην
πλατεία του χωριού. Κάντε µια
στάση, προκειµένου να δοκιµάσετε
τις περίφηµες σφακιανές πίτες
µε τυρί και µέλι, ή ανηφορίστε
προς το καστροµονάστηρο της
Αγίας Αικατερίνης. Στα βόρεια θα
διακρίνετε ακόµη τµήµατα από τα
κυκλώπεια τείχη που προστάτευαν
την αρχαία πόλη. Συνεχίζοντας
δυτικά, λίγο µετά τη γέφυρα
Βαρδινογιάννη (σ.σ.: ύψους 138µ.,
δηµοφιλής τόπος συνάντησης
των απανταχού bungee jumpers),
θα συναντήσετε την ερειπωµένη
Αράδαινα µε την εκκλησία του
Αρχάγγελου Μιχαήλ (14ος αι.),
του προστάτη των Σφακιανών.
Κάτω από τη θεαµατική µεταλλική
γέφυρα, που ενώνει δύο βουνά,
χάσκει το οµώνυµο φαράγγι.
Από εκεί περνά µονοπάτι που
καταλήγει, µετά από πεζοπορία
2,5-3 ωρών, στα µαγικά νερά
της παραλίας Μάρµαρα.

Loutro
The sheltered from the wind port of an-
cient Anopolis (old name “Phoenix), took
its name from the baths (loutra) disco-
vered in the region; it’s the only natural
port south of Chania, and a popular ho-
liday destination for romantics who are
looking for calmness in one of the most
picturesque Cretan fishermen’s villages.
In Loutro, there are no shouts, honks,
or stress, and no cars. Time stops in this
place, 71 km south of Chania. Also, no
road reaches the village; access is only
by sea (there is a daily ship service to and
fromChora Sfakia, Sougia, Gavdos, Paleo-
chora, and Agia Roumeli), or on foot (one
and a half hour of hard trekking fromCho-
ra Sfakia, or Anopolis).
The small beach in front of the settle-
ment, and Keramos at its east end, is a

perfect choice, especially when the south
wind blows. The beaches are well-orga-
nized, pebbly, and the water has an ama-
zing deep blue-green color. If you are
lucky, you may see its regular “visitors”,
the Caretta caretta sea turtle.
To visit today’s Phoenix, in the next
cove, walk 700 m on path E4. For a more
difficult stroll, you must go up a stone
path, 3 km long, which leads to Agia
Ekaterini of Anopolis, one of Crete’s best
natural balconies. Also, here you can see
the Municipal building that was used by
Greece’s first government in 1821.
Agia Roumeli
Agia Roumeli welcomes the thousands of
visitors who cross Samaria Gorge every
year, and the settlement has been con-
structed around the bay where the gorge
