nings, your walk may be accompanied by
the melody of an open-air concert by one
of the island’s philharmonic orchestras.
Don’t miss:
• Strolling the kantounia, the labyrin-
thine alleys of the old town, punctuated
by laundry lines, Venetian coats-of-arms,
elaborate door-knockers, handsome man-
sions and doll’s house-like shops.
• Reading the Sunday newspapers at
the cafes of the Liston, the arcade mod-
elled on Rue de Rivoli. Under Venetian
rule, you could only come here if your
name was listed in the Libro d’Oro.
• The gardens of Mon Repos and the
Achilleion, the palace built by Empress
Elisabeth of Austria (Princess Sisi).
• Drinking ginger beer at a café in Spi-
anada, the largest square in the Balkans,
much of which is given over to a cricket
pitch. Corfiots love this game, brought
to the island by (who else?) the British.
• Selfies at the Old Fortress. For pan-
oramic shots, include the New Fortress,
with the Lion of Saint Mark at its gate.
• Wandering to Kanoni and admiring
Pontikonissi reflected in the still waters.
• Exploring the Museum of Asian Art
in the Palace of Saint Michael and Saint
George. The Municipal Art Gallery is
housed in the same building.
• Watching the sunset from the Kaiser’s
Throne in Pelekas.
